Dawnings

A fixture

By Nicholas Hooper

Now we always know what happens here:

There will be a wave of uncertainty
and then the flow of ideas from nowhere
to somewhere, to this page, written in a font
that was once engraved in metal but now
lives in the mind of a friendly machine

and finding the way from phrase to sentence,
from letter to word, from finger to keyboard,
a shape is made, offering ideas, modes, feelings

And how the silence howls with groaning urgency
as feet and fingers tingle and a not so foul process
is written in electric ink shaping a jagged picture
formed from the night passed and the dawn coming
