Dawnings

a piece of holiday

By Nicholas Hooper

same but different to the welcoming isle
the green lanes lush but less flowered, the seagull nesting site mostly empty
with some latecomers left behind like stragglers leaving a silent festival

spring has come early
encouraging growth and birth
but has gone cold like an unloving mother

we hope for more sun on this grey morning
human meteorological machines talk of a sunny week ahead
so we plan to walk and write and make music with the sands in our hands in our minds

a thrush came in loudly declaring its kingdom in the garden
and flowers of herbs still bloom with no sunny encouragement
and tea and company will be our sun this morning
