Dawnings
a strange meeting
By Nicholas Hooper
through a door
there’s a man
you can talk to
he will serve you
so you can buy
that very thing you saw
on a screen
but it’s here
now
in front of you
you can feel it
you can hear about it
and if you wish
to possess it
you can give the man
money
now
out of the door
you have it in your hand
no waiting for a delivery
no phone texts with
between 3.49 and 4.49
(how ridiculous
that precise timing
as it will never
be true)
so
you met a man
you saw the object
you bought it
you have it in you hand
you know about it
and you think
‘what a strange meeting’

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
