Dawnings

here, right here

By Nicholas Hooper

here, right here
as the red scar of dawn
breaks into light
feel the weight of limbs
the age of eyes
and repeat, repeat that nurture
learnt by accident
over years of searching
for you know not what

in that time
as the world spins
on the brow of a hill
and revelation is a thought away,
out of reach but always there,
listen, listen to the quiet breath
of a world still sleeping
to the silent roar
of the planets sweeping
as they pass us by

the sun, our massive neighbour
is hidden by necessity
his power too great
for human eyes
as he scorches Mercury
but leaves us to our vaporous existence
as we circle carefully
in our dance around
his luring fires
and drop gently
to another day

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
