Dawnings
It’s more complicated
By Nicholas Hooper
It’s more complicated than that
We think life can be so simple
But miss a message on your phone
And it can be like falling downstairs
The interconnectedness (what a long word)
The interconnectedness of life trips us up
And we find ourselves tumbling,
Searching for handholds in a slippery world
Everything means something
Everybody means something
And once that door is opened
It can never be shut
So don’t expect life to be simple
Like our own bodies are made up
Of interconnecting neural pathways
Blood vessels that can recreate themselves
A lymphatic system that we don’t quite understand
So are our lives, our peoples, our themes
It’s complicated, don’t try to say it’s not!

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
