Dawnings
Just a moment
By Nicholas Hooper
There it was,
I thought I caught it, that moment.
Things were still, blurred, and then images drifted across my mind
and I watched them go: the longing, the sadness, the anxiety about a noise
but the next moment it was all still, except for the movement of breath.
There’s life, and I’m so thankful for it and for being here now.
The click of the keys, the light of the lamp, the nearly silence
of an early morning with a magic that records my music
as these ideas stumble across the page
like a collection of pictures
found in a moment
and gone with
the next.

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
