Dawnings
last time
By Nicholas Hooper
last time I came here, it was cold
the heat was left in the bus
and all I could do was stamp
as I carried my guitar case
yearning for my arrival
at a safe warm haven
where I could sip tea
and play a tune for approval
but that was so long ago
I never take the bus now
an electric car being my sop
to global warming
needing, as I do,
the so-called freedom
to leave and arrive at my
personal chosen time
no need to carry my case now
or stamp my feet in the cold
snuggled in my warm vehicle of choice
I can queue in endless traffic
breathing in the gas from
other cars not so well appointed
and bemoaning the state of things
while listening to my favourite music
again and again and again…

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
