Dawnings
like the walls of sand
By Nicholas Hooper
like the walls of sand in your sandcastle
let the sea seep in and dissolve the barriers
let the life of the ocean invade the smallest part of your building
and wash away all that stops the flow of life through you
as the swirl and spume of salt water
makes its own patterns on the beach
the tide pushing, pushing in to take your craft away
release this thought in grains of sand and watch as it spreads into invisibility
all those cares
all those thanks
all that gratitude
all that love
as the sand swirls into canyons to the sounds of sweep and swish
and the drag brings up the darker pebbles to bury them again
so the rhythm of life brings the here and then and next and gone
and the pattern you made is skimmed with sunshine glinting on water

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
