Dawnings

soft,

By Nicholas Hooper

soft, the challenge
to old rigidity
finding a smoothness of thought
that casts out the gatekeepers
and finds a flow through new caverns
as bright shines the steely waters
of a long life

now, with a wind change
tired muscles
of eyes, of hands, of shoulders
will find freshness in thought
following the dawn that’s given
every day on waking
bringing reality
to dreams past

would you look now
to the east
for comfort, for joy
but find it already in your heart
as it was cast so many years ago
and rejoice in that continuity
of life lived in a love filled
from inside your heart

remember mother
father, family
and all that legacy
of value not thrown away
but clasped gently to your chest
as memories feed an old mind
with good things cherished
and be glad

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
