Dawnings

the child and the man

By Nicholas Hooper

he felt so small in this body so old
surely, by now he would be a man
but still he was a child playing in the sands of life

grownup, grownup where are you
to protect, to advise, to comfort?
how I wish to be cradled in your arms tonight

but that child must wait and listen
in the silence that surrounds us all
there is the breath of an adult so old and yet young

and listen, listen to the wisdom
passed down from thousands of years
that unless you come as a child you cannot enter the kingdom of heaven

but where does this lead and what does it mean
that for all that pain of learning and growth
is it the child that knows true love and happiness?

both, came the answer
the young leads the old leads the young
for you will forever change and age
as well as always being that child that plays in the sands of life
