Dawnings
three bells
By Nicholas Hooper
three bells passed
and having gone
left me with a feeling of gratitude
for those moments of sight and sound
when the world gave and I could see
gone are the darknesses
of the churning, turning night dreams
and a fresh light shines on all that I can see
the air is quiet and still
as if waiting for a turn in the earth
life, blessed life comes full now
as the green thrusts up from the deep soil
where the water of life stays
feeding, feeding the roots
of the yearning, leaning plants
and I know now
that nature will have its way
and if I watch, it will show its power
of life and death, light and dark
and revel in in its strength as we pass the shining stars
